Enforcement Team of Deptt. of CS&CA conducts inspection to check prevailing market prices of vegetables

      The Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs has been actively monitoring the price and availability of all essential commodities including groceries and agro-horticultural products in the markets of this UT especially during the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the pandemic. The Enforcement Team of the Department today conducted rigorous inspection in the markets of Port Blair, Tehsil as well as part of Ferrargunj Tehsil to keep a check in price of  vegetables as well as enforcing various  rules/regulations framed under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 in larger public interest. During inspection, it was found that many roadside vegetable vendors were not displaying the retail price for the information of the consumers and all such vendors were made to display the price list accordingly. It was also revealed that many vendors were found using unverified weights & measures which were seized by the enforcement team and appropriate legal proceedings were initiated.
     All the vegetable vendors have been once against advised to refrain from any unfair trade practices and over charging which may lead to exploitation of consumers. This may be treated as the last warning and thereafter stringent legal action as deemed fit will be initiated against them as per the various provisions under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 as well as the Legal Metrology Act, 2009; which may result in imprisonment of up to 7 years or fine or both. Offenders shall also be detained under the Prevention of Black Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980.
     In the interest of consumers, the Department appeals to all the stakeholders to be aware about their duties & responsibilities during this pandemic situation. Further, all the vendors/retailers/wholesalers have been requested to wear face masks at all times and shall ensure proper compliance of Covid Appropriate Behaviour by the consumers.
