Comprehensive & quality antenatal care for all pregnant women

Port Blair ,

The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) has been launched by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India aimed at providing assured, comprehensive and quality antenatal care, free of cost, universally to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month.
The PMSMA launched in the year 2016 guarantees a minimum package of antenatal care services to women in their 2nd/3rd trimesters of pregnancy at designated Government health facilities and it envisages to improve the quality and coverage of Antenatal Care (ANC) including diagnostics and counseling services as part of the Reproductive Maternal Neonatal Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) Strategy.
According to information received from the Directorate of Health Services, the PMSMA was implemented in A&N Islands on Sept.9, 2016. On the 9th day of every month, all essential maternal health services are provided at identified public health facilities. Under this scheme, a total number of 4476 pregnant women were examined during 2019-20 (April 2019 to March 2020) and 179 pregnant women with high risk were referred to G.B Pant Hospital during the same period.
PMSMA helps in providing quality ANC including complete set of investigations such as HB, Urine Albumin, VDRL, OGTT including ultrasound for each pregnant woman. These facilitates  timely detection, referral, treatment and follow-up of high risk pregnancies and ensure that all pregnant women complete their scheduled Antenatal Care Visit.
