Massive cleanliness drive held at Viper Island on Gandhi Jayanti

Paying rich tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the Directorate of Tourism organised a massive cleanliness drive at the historical Viper Island on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi. The cleanliness drive was supported in great measure by the Andaman Association of Tour Operators, Boat Operators Association, Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and Federation of Responsible Tour Operators (FORTO)
The cleanliness drive was led by the Director (Tourism), Dr.Viswa Kannan. Shri Girish Arora, President ACCI, Sri. Hamza, Vice President, Andaman Association of Tour Operators, Shri Rathnam President FORTO, Sri Aswin Bala, Association of Boat Operators actively participated along with their members. Sri Hariharan -entrepreneur involved in collection of plastic and glass waste, also contributed during the occasion.
Within five hours, the entire Viper Island, which was in need of such a purposeful community efforts, wore a new look devoid of any kind of solid /glass/plastic and bio- wastes which gets accumulated on its shore line due to tidal effects. As many as 130 bags full of plastic bottles, glass bottles and other wastes were picked up from the Island and were transported to Port Blair for disposal. Altogether 110 personnel from various organisations including the staff of the Directorate of Information, Publicity &Tourism participated in the voluntary cleanliness drive with great enthusiasm and dedication.
The Director (Tourism) complimented all those who have contributed in this effort of 'Swatch Bharat, Swatch Paryatan' in the right spirit befitting the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi, a communication from the Director (Tourism) said.
