Sri Vijaya Puram ,

World Veterinary Day, was observed on April 26, along with rest of the country, with the theme of this year- "Animal Health Takes a Team," which highlights their collaborative contributions to animal, human, and environmental health. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services organized diverse activities across the Islands, engaging farmers, pet owners, students, and local communities.
Veterinary health camps, Animal Birth Control (ABC) programs, deworming drives, and vaccination campaigns were conducted across all districts. Over 500 animals, including bovines, caprines, swine, canines, and poultry, were treated, dewormed, and vaccinated. Anti-rabies vaccinations protected numerous dogs, while ABC programs neutered dogs and cats using advanced surgical techniques, such as pre-scrotal and intradermal suturing. Farmers received medicines, mineral mixtures, and 600 Vanaraja chicks to promote backyard poultry farming, along with training on fodder and azolla cultivation.
Initiatives included an essay writing competition, quiz competition, career counselling session, and awareness program highlighting veterinary career opportunities. A farmers' training on enclosure feeding was held, with participants receiving certificates and eggs, alongside a health and infertility camp. Staff were honored with Certificates of Appreciation, a press release from Deptt. of AH&VS said.
