Lt. Governor meets Power Minister Discusses setting up of renewable energy projects in Islands Vision of making Islands diesel free presented

Hon'ble Lt Governor, Lt Gen A K Singh (Retd), had a very fruitful meeting with Hon'ble Minister of State for Power (I/C), Shri Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on 23rd December 2015, regarding setting up of renewable energy projects in the Islands. This meeting was also attended by the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Shri A Pujari, Secretary Power, Shri U Tripathi, Secretary MNRE, Shri Tarun Kapoor, Joint Secretary MNRE, and Shri Arun Baroka, Pr Secretary (Power) A&N Administration. 
Hon'ble Lt Governor presented the vision of making the Islands diesel free through a holistic strategy as envisaged by Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He mentioned that diesel would be eliminated to a large extent from all sectors - major being power and shipping- and would be used to the minimum extent. It would not only save money but also provide clean energy in the long run. He also briefed the Minister about setting up of Gas based power plant in collaboration with Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL) and requested for providing support of Ministry of Power. In solar PV sector, a project of setting up of 100 MW solar parks in various locations of the Islands was also discussed in detail. This will be set up by CPSU NTPC and work is expected to begin by Mar 2016.  Apart from solar park, another CPSU, namely SECI, will start implementation of 1MW solar roof top power generation projects in 13 Govt buildings. SECI will also implement another 5 MW of projects in other Govt buildings, which will be identified soon. The projects for Havelock and Neil Islands, for ground mounted systems, would be implemented by REIL, another PSU. 
Hon'ble Minister directed the senior officers of Govt of India to expedite the projects and work out very reasonable tariffs. He also instructed that an immediate action plan be worked out to show progress on the ground. Later on, a separate meeting was held in the Ministry amongst the senior officials of MoP and MNRE with Pr Secretary (Power) to work out an action plan, which was circulated immediately to all partners.
