Workshop on 'Judicious use of Chemical and Organic Agriculture Inputs' conducted at Chouldari

A one-day workshop on the theme 'Judicious use of Chemical and Organic Agriculture Inputs' was organized today at Community Hall, Chouldari with an aim to sensitize farmers on balanced use of fertilizers for sustainable Development of Agriculture and Island Ecosystem.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, Secretary (Agriculture), A&N Administration emphasized on urgent need to minimize indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and adopt sustainable agricultural practices suited to Island conditions. The Secretary (Agriculture) cited examples of hazardous effect of Endosulphan pesticide tragedy in Kerala and cancer train of Punjab, a grim reminder of the role of chemicals used in Agriculture.
Welcoming the gathering, the Joint Director (Agriculture), highlighted that the Workshop was organized under the guidance and leadership of the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration and Secretary (Agriculture). He stressed upon the significance of the initiative in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and supporting the balanced use of inputs.
The guest of honour, Smti Pramila Kumari, Zilla Parishad Member, Chouldari and Smti Chaitali Roy, Samiti Member, Chouldari also addressed the gathering. Both highlighted the growing significance of integrated and judicious use of organic manures, bio-fertilizers, and chemical fertilizers for improving crop productivity, soil fertility, and long-term sustainability in agriculture.
The technical session began with a presentation on the 'Judicious Use of Agriculture Inputs' (Combining Organic and Chemical Inputs) by Shri Mohit, SMS, KVK. Dr Y. Ramakrishna, Incharge, KVK also addressed the farmers on the above topic. Dr. Talaviya Harshang Kumar, Scientist from ICAR-CIARI gave a presentation on 'Adverse Effects of Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides'.
Dr. Sivagnanam, Plant Protection Officer, CIPMC addressed the audience on Pest and Disease Management through IPM Practices followed by Dr. (Smti) S. C. Rekha, Assistant Director (Agri) and Dr. (Smti) Sahana Begum, Agriculture Officer also delivered lectures and presentation on various Agri -inputs and its uses in INM and preparation of various Bio inputs in INM respectively.
Videos were screened to disseminate the information on adverse effects of Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides during the workshop for farmers.
During the workshop, farmers also shared their views on judicious use of chemical and organic agriculture inputs. A feedback session was also held, where participants shared their insights, queries, and overall experience.
Altogether, 103 participants, including progressive farmers, SHG members, PRI members and staff of Department of Agriculture attended the programme, a press release from Agriculture Deptt. said.
