Awareness prog. on 'Waste Management, Climate Change and Environmental Hazards of Single-Use Plastics' conducted by ANPCC, Department of S&T

The Andaman & Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC), Department of Science & Technology (DST) conducted an impactful awareness program on 16th January, 2025 on Waste Management, Climate Change and Environmental Hazards of Single-Use Plastics. The sessions were held at Government Senior Secondary School, Diglipur, and Government Senior Secondary School, Subhash Gram in North & Middle Andaman, with the presence of the respective School Principals.
Ms. R. Svathi Lakshmi, Law Officer, DST, delivered an in-depth presentation on various forms of pollution, including air, water, and land pollution. She highlighted the causes, sources, and preventive measures, emphasizing the harmful effects of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems and biodiversity. Videos showcasing advanced waste treatment technologies, such as incineration plants, the pyrolysis process, and applications of recycled products, were also presented. Additionally, she discussed legal frameworks for waste management and the significance of the global plastic treaty.
Ms. Pavya, Junior Scientific Assistant at ANPCC, provided insights into regulatory initiatives undertaken by ANPCC to curb pollution. She discussed the monitoring of industrial units by the Pollution Control Boards, focusing on how these regulatory bodies assess compliance with environmental standards and shared recent examples of climate change impacts, including global warming and ozone depletion. She explained the concept of circular economy, emphasizing its potential for creating sustainable business opportunities.
Shri P. Senthil Kumar, Artist and Program Coordinator, DST engaged with students to raise awareness about the ill-effects and dangers of Single-Use Plastic (SUP). During the session, he shared important information about proper disposal of single-use plastics and highlighted the environmental impact of improper disposal.
The program featured interactive sessions with over 70 students at each school. Cloth bags, pamphlets, and posters advocating eco-friendly practices and the adoption of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were distributed to students, encouraging their active involvement.
Additionally, in Ram Nagar Village, Diglipur, 50 cloth bags were distributed for general public to further spread awareness about Single-Use Plastics (SUP) and their impact on the environment, a press release from ANPCC said.
